Common bone diseases include osteoporosis, rickets and osteomalacia. Osteoporosis causes the bones to become weak and break. The disease affects individuals over the age of 50 who have a family history of osteoporosis or other conditions, such as bone cancer. Eating foods rich in calcium, getting enough exercise, not smoking and taking proper medication can help lower the risk.
Rickets and osteomalacia cause abnormal softening of the bones due to a lack of vitamin D and calcium. In children, the disease is called rickets, which causes bone pain in the extremities, muscle weakness, short stature, bowlegs and deformed teeth. In adults, its called osteomalacia, which produces bone fractures, hip pain, muscle spasms and numbness and tingling in the extremities. Treatment for both conditions is usually in the form of vitamin D and calcium supplements, plenty of sunlight exposure and orthopedic devices to correct any deformities.
