What are the differences between Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus?

According to research, 25% or one out of every 4 people has diabetes. Diabetes is mainly of three types. Type 1 diabetes mellitus or Juvenile onset or IDDM (insulin dependent diabetes mellitus), Type 2 diabetes mellitus or adult onset or NIDDM (non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and Gestational diabetes which is developed to some pregnant women (who have never had diabetes before, have a high blood glucose level during pregnancy. It may precede development of Type 2 DM).

Hi @chemist! There are four types of diabetes mellitus and Type 1 and type 2 are the mos common type of diabetes. The others are gestational diabetes which you have mentioned and other specific type of DM.

Type 1 DM is also called Insulin Dependent Diabetes (IDDM) or Juvenile Diabetes.
This type of DM develops in childhood or adolescence and can be observed on both male and female. However, there is an increased incidence in the white population, has an acute onset and can develop and progress fast.

This type of DM is cause by completed deficiency of Insulin which results from the destruction of Beta cells that helps produce insulin.
There are 3 factors that can cause this
1. genetic predisposition - family history of having IDDM
2. autoimmunity - the islet cell antibodies failed to provide immunity to the pancreas and instead act against it and destroys beta cells in pancreas that help produce insulin.
3. environmental factors also contributes to the development like viral infections, exposure to cow's milk and geography where it is common in Finland and Sardinia.

For Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is also called Adult onset Diabetes and Non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM).
The main cause of this is insufficient or not enough insulin produced or secreted by the Beta Cell which leads to the increase of blood sugar that lead further into developing type 2 DM.
This diabetes occur due to poor eating habit, being obese and failure to exercise.

Good question@chemist, the differences between Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes mellitus are:

* Type 1 diabetes always occurs in children and was formerly called juvenile diabetes; While Type 2 diabetes is common in adults and was known as adult-onset diabetes.

* Type 1 diabetes is an insulin-dependent diabetes, while Type 2 diabetes is a non insulin-dependent diabetes. Insulin is a hormone that helps the passage of glucose into the muscles, tissues, liver and other cells in the body. This hormone is produced by the pancreas and when this organ produces a low amount of insulin, the blood sugar goes up and results in diabetes.

*Type 1 diabetes is a degenerative condition where the pancreas produces a little amount of insulin or no insulin at all. While Type 2 diabetes occurs when the system becomes resistant to the functions of the insulin.

Being a diabetic and a CNA myself, I know that the ONLY difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes is that with type one diabetes the pancreas no longer produces insulin and therefore insulin is needed. Type 2 diabetes is where the pancreas still produces insulin but not as much as a should and therefore pills can be taken instead of shots. Also, with type two diabetes your body is resistant to the insulin that is produced. It has nothing to do with age like I thought at first because I became type 1 diabetic at the age of 25.

Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are very different. Although "juvenile" onset (for type 1) and "adult" onset (for type 2) have been used in the past for these two kinds of diabetes, this may not be an accurate way of describing them.

Type 1 diabetes is a serious condition that results from the body's inability to produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin helps the body properly metabolize blood sugar (glucose). Causes can be genetic or rarely viral or autoimmune in nature. Symptoms occur rapidly for type 1 diabetes and include blurred vision, fatigue, hunger, weight loss and increased urination. Someone with type 1 diabetes must manage the disease with doctor prescribed daily insulin injections.

Increasing numbers of children are being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. A person with type 2 diabetes produces insulin, but it is less efficient that a normal person's insulin. This results in high blood sugar which can be a health risk. Anyone can develop type 2 diabetes as a result of inactivity or obesity, although certain individuals may have a greater likelihood. Sometimes an individual with type 2 diabetes may have no symptoms at all. Diet and exercise are usually prescribed by a doctor to control type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes types - classified into 2 groups they are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Sub classified into prediabetes and gestational diabetes. Type1 diabetes - body has no or low insulin production, which is caused by autoimmune disorder and only treated with insulin shots. Type2 diabetes - pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or the muscle cells does not able to properly utilize the insulin. Pre-diabetes is a condition in which blood glucose levels are marginally higher than normal but not high enough for diabetes diagnosis.
