What are the defining characteristics of "punk cabaret?"
The first time I ever knew of a band describing itself as "punk cabaret," it was the Dresden Dolls ... I'm pretty sure Amanda Palmer coined this term. More recently, I've heard of other bands describing themselves as "punk cabaret," so it seems some are viewing this as a genre of music and/or style of musical performance.
What are the characteristics of punk cabaret? All theories welcome...not sure if a formal definition exists.
Video below is an Amanda Palmer solo performance which is followed by a declaration that "punk cabaret is freedom" ... looks like she's viewing her post-Dresden Dolls work as a continuation of "punk cabaret" style.

To me, its just another way to re package something that has already been done. Sure you doing it a little different but, just because you are the first to use a term, doesn't mean your being creative. When artists "mature" away from punk they want to use a more serious term to describe themselves, who knows why. Artists take themselves a lot more serious than others do. I imagine it has something to do with being mysterious or not promoting shows heavily and doing them in weird locations. Who knows, its all in the name of the artist being taken seriously.
I dont see this catching on, it seems too vague, kinda like "post punk." No one really knows what it is, they just know certain bands call themselves post punk.
Its hard to beat Cat Stevens, I would at least try to make it my own. Sorry but i gotta give this a thumbs down. Dont mess with legends, the song was already good you cant improve on it. I'm gonna go listen to some Yusef Islam and let you check this song out. You might like it. This is Nouvelle Vauge (french for new wave) doing Love will tear us apart, by joy division. Also has the ocean in the back round and female vocals on an originally male song.
