Grandmaster Melle Mel, Grandmaster Caz, and Grandmaster Flash, were some of the originators of Hip Hop. Some important characteristics of a hip hop grandmaster would be the ability to cut, scratch, freestyle (spontaneously create rhymes that are spoken in time with a syncopated rhythm), and "keep a party hype."

The definition of a Chess Grandmaster has already been given, so I refer to that poster for the definition. Prodigy Sergey Karjakin, from the Ukraine, became the youngest Grandmaster when he was 12 years old.

A martial arts Grandmaster would have to have the following characteristics: be a master of every technique that was practiced in thier school. They would also need to be well versed in physiology, psychology, nutritiion, as well as understand how to relate ancient skills and techniques to the modern world. An example of a Martial Arts Grandmaster is Soke Masaaki Hatsumi, 34th Grandmaster of the Nine Schools of Ninjutsu

What disquishes a grandmaster, is it his special abilities or his teaching? Are fighters who study under a grandmaster better than so who study from a variety of styles a non grandmaster teachers? Are Grandmasters visionaries of their system?
How many students openly challenge a grandmaster?
Take the Aikdo, Grandmaster Ushiba, in his older years, he worked with children. Yet, he was known for his incredible skill to effortlessly demonstrate Aki. Empty hand against sword using sword movement to blend and neutralize.

What distinguishes a Grandmaster from other skilled fighters?
Grandmasters spend a lifetime studying thier art, and oftentimes other styles as well. Grandmasters don't limit themselves to just studying martial arts. Since I used Soke Hatsumi as my example, I'll continue to use him as the standard. In addition to being a master of the 9 schools of ninja, he's also studied and mastered several other marital arts styles. He's a stunt coordinator and movie consultant. He graduated from Meiji University in Tokyo, with a major in theater studies, and osteopathic medicine. He's an author, and actor, caligrapher, and a historiographer. He holds several honorary degrees and has been given many awards.

A novice must find a teacher, who should be a skilled fighter. The skilled fighter had to learn from other skilled fighters. The Grandmaster, either directly or indirectly, teaches them all.
I dont think many people openly challenge grandmasters. They are usually well respected and people many times spend alot of money and make many sacrifices to be trained by grandmasters: you dont normally attack something you've invested into.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XlEqNkuZsY&feature=fvwO'sensei Morihei Ueshiba was a great martial artist! As master Ueshiba aged, he continuously changed not only his martial art style, but his philiosophy. This is another typical characteristic of grandmasters: the ability to continuously grow.
Steven Segal is another famous aikido master, but I'm not sure if one would call him "O'sensei" just yet.
Well, if a grandmaster can be easily beaten by one of his students, then he isn't much of a grandmaster. They are necessarily the visionaries of whatever system they teach.
