What are the causes of bleeding gums?
My brother often complains of slight bleeding of gums whenever he is brushing his teeth. He noticed this two weeks ago. This is the first time that it happened so he was a littel concerned. He is planning to see his dentist to consult him about this. I am thinking maybe he has sensitive gums. What are the probable causes of bleeding gums? Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

Bleeding of the gums can be caused by a number of things. Some are more serious than others.
* The most frequent cause for people to have bleeding of the gums is gum disease AKA gingivitis. The gums are usually sore and swollen as well. This can turn into something uglier if not treated. It can cause the gums to recede and bone loss. Then turn into Periodontitis, then tooth loss. People should floss everyday along with brushing to help fight against this.
* Brushing the teeth and gums to hard can also cause this. People should avoid using a hard bristle toothbrush. This is consider a rare occurrence, but it is possible.
* This use of tobacco, smoking or smoke less can be the cause of bleeding gums.
* Hormones which are beyond their normal levels can cause this problem.
* The use of certain medications such as oral contraceptives, nasal sprays and antidepressants.
* Disease that classify as Autoimmune disorders like Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, among others.
* Vitamin K deficiency.
Anyone should see a dentist if suffering from "a little pink in the sink" or bleeding gums.
