Hello @jonsigler!
Respiratory disease is the term used for diseases that affects the respiratory system. The respiratory system comprises the lungs, airways, diaphragm, windpipe, throat, and nasal passages.
Respiratory disease can be due to a number of things like inhalation of toxic agents, accidents, and harmful lifestyles and habits like smoking. Respiratory diseases and its corresponding symptoms can also be due to infections, genetic factors and anything else that affects the lungs directly or indirectly.
Common examples of respiratory diseases are :
*Emphysema - the major cause of this condition is by smoking tobacco
Treatment: supporting breathing with anticholinergics, bronchodilators, steroid medication, effective body positioning and supplemental oxygen
*Bronchitis is inflammation of the mucous membranes of the bronchi which are the airways that carry airflow from the trachea into the lungs. This conditions is most often due to viruses that affects the epithelium of the bronchi resulting in inflammation and increased mucus production
Treatment: non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, decongestants and expectorants, cough suppressants,
