What are the causes and treatments of thyroid cancer?

I colleague of mine was absent from work for two days. When she reported to work yesterday she told me that she had been to the doctor for a series of test. She noticed that there is a nodule that is growing on her throat. The doctor made some test but the results are not out yet. The nodule is growing in the thyroid gland. My friend is worried and scared that she might have thyroid cancer. I told her to wait for the results first before worrying too much. What are some of the causes of thyroid cancer? Is it treatable?

The cause or causes of thyroid cancer is still unknown, but there are some risk factors associated with this kind of cancer.

Thyroid cancer occurs when the cells in a person’s thyroid goes through genetic changes .These genetic changes makes the thyroid cells to grow and increase rapidly.

There are about four to five different types of thyroid cancer, which includes; Papillary thyroid cancer, Anaplastic thyroid cancer, Follicular thyroid cancer, Medullary thyroid cancer and Thyroid lymphoma. they can be classified according to the microscopic examination of the thyroid tissues gotten from them through the use of a needle or surgery for biopsy. This is in order in order to study the manifestations and progress of the disease.

Thyroid cancer can be treated through surgical operations; which may either be thyroidectomy (Removing all or most of the thyroid), tracheostomy or Lobectomy. Other treatments for thyroid cancer are the use of Radioactive Iodine-131 and External irradiation.

Causes for thyroid cancer are :
-Radiations
-Family history
-Gender
-Age
-Race
-Not enough iodine in the diet.

Prevention:
The doctor may refer patients to doctors (oncologists) who specialize in treating cancer, or patients may ask for a referral. Specialists who treat thyroid cancer include surgeons, endocrinologists (some of whom are called thyroidologists because they specialize in thyroid diseases), medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. Treatment generally begins within a few weeks after the diagnosis. There will be time for patients to talk with the doctor about treatment choices, get a second opinion, and learn more about thyroid cancer.

Experts do not know the exact cause of thyroid cancer. Possible causes are exposure to high levels of radiation and changes in the DNA of your cells (this seem to play a role in some people who inherit the problem. It also occurs in people age 60 or older who do not take enough iodine in their diet. Thyroid cancer treatments are different according to its types but common treatments include surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. In addition to surgery, radioactive iodine and thyroid hormone therapy are used. Thyroid cancer is an uncommon, rare type of cancer and women have more probability of having this cancer than men.
