What are the causes and treatments of scoliosis?
Our neighbor told me that her 15-year old daughter has a scoliosis. They brought her to their doctor and after a thorough evaluation was diagnosed with it. She noticed at first that her shoulders are not level and she often leans on one side. She thought that it was a temporary thing since she usually carry her heavy backpack on the other side. Is this one of the causes of her scoliosis? What are the causes and treatments for this?

In the majority of people with scoliosis, the cause is unknown. But it could be caused by an infection or injury to the spine. A scoliosis that the cause is not known is called idiopathic scoliosis. When a person is diagnosed for scoliosis, the doctor checks to see if it is an idiopathic scoliosis or one that has a cause. The scoliosis with a known cause are grouped as either structural or nonstructural scoliosis.
The structural or nonstructural scoliosis can be caused by infections , an underlying condition or injuries such as, leg length (if one leg is longer than the other), appendicitis, muscle spasms, poliomyelitis, birth defects, neurofibromatosis and also an inherited connective tissue disorder.
Treatments of scoliosis can be through surgery, wearing of braces and observation by a spin specialist.
