What are the causes and treatments of ringing of ears?
A classmate and close friend of my husband in college recently visited us last weekend. They had a long talk because it has been a while since they last saw each other. He shared to us that he had been in a vehicular accident. Although it was not very serious but experiences ringing of his ears that happen from time to time. I told him to consult an EENT physician so that he will be evaluated. What are the causes of this and can this be corrected and treated?

Ringing in the ears is medically known as Tinnitus. This condition is caused by several factors which includes;
*Constant exposure to loud noise
*Blockage from earwax
*Stress, trauma or depression
*Meniere's disease
*Allergies
*Medications such as antibiotics
*Injuries to the head and neck
Tinnitus or ringing in the ear is usually treated by understanding the main cause of the condition. If it is an earwax blockage , the excess wax is removed and the ear goes back to normal, but if it's a medical problem, the patient is usually given some medication to help reduce or stop the noise. Common drugs used for the treatment of severe tinnitus includes, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, Niravam and Xanax.
