What are the causes and treatments of gallstones?
Our neighbor who is also a close friend of our family told me yesterday that she consulted her doctor because she felt like her stomach is being squeezed sometimes. She experienced this two weeks ago and it becomes more painful every time and she has problem digesting. She told me that her doctor said the cause is gallstone. She was prescribed medicines for it. What are the causes and treatments for this?

There are two types of gallstones, namely pigmented gallstones and cholesterol gallstones. The main cause of gallstones is not known, but researchers believe that it could be caused by many factors, which includes:
*When the bile in a person’s gall bladder contains excess cholesterol. The bile can normally dissolve cholesterol in the gall bladder, but if the amount of cholesterol in the gall bladder is in excess, it would be difficult for the bile to secrete enough chemicals to dissolve it.
*When the bile in a person’s gall bladder contains excess bilirubin it could cause bile pigmented gall stones.
*When the bile in a person’s gall bladder becomes contaminated it might also result in gallstones.
Gallstones can be treated by surgery and also by medications. In the surgical method the gall bladder is removed and the bile no longer stores in the gall bladder but goes straight to the liver. The doctor would prescribe drugs that will help to dissolve the gallstones. But this method takes a lot of time.
