1. Most large companies have in house development, and some of them have incredible websites (look at Apple).
2. I feel web design firms sometimes get "type-casted" - they may "hit it big" with a type of site, for instance a particular style of Flash site, and then everyone wants them to make the same type of site for them, so they become the "Flash experts" or "ASP.NET database driven" experts or, more generally, "these guys are the most artistic," "This team is the best for B2B sites," yada yada.

Without one shred of doubt he has the best web design firm IN THE WORLD.
