Alder, Apple, and especially Ash trees are excellent quality wood to burn. They have only mild smell, low smoke, and are relatively easy to split into workable pieces. Cherry, Elm, and Beech are also good second choices if acquireable. On a side note; wood chips for the bottom of a fire are great to have for initially starting it up.
