You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I've done this a few times myself (run marathons and half-marathons) , and I would say a very comfortable, broken in but not TOO old, pair of running sneakers. Don't just buy a new pair for the marathon. Make sure you're run in them at least a few times (but more than a few is better, including a couple of really long runs), that they're comfortable and don't cause blisters. And make sure you use the same kind of socks for the marathon that you train in.

There are a huge number of brands and models of running shoes, and which brand and model is best for each runner is really personal preference. Me, I like Asics, but no particular model. I look for what's on sale, and I've always had good luck with these. They're not a super expensive brand, but the quality is good, and they tend to last a long time for me. When they've lost too much of that cushiony bounce for running, I usually demote the current pair to walking / around town shoes and get a new pair for running.

Here's the Asics home page: http://www.asicsamerica.com/
