What are the best TV series to catch up on this summer?
Breaking Bad is at the top of my list due to friends recommendations.
Please post the five you think I should "catch up" on.

1. I really enjoyed watching Edie Falco keep the Sopranos family in order all those years, and now she's back on Showtime as Nurse Jackie. They re currently dishing out the second season, so you'd only have a season and a half to catch up on. The episodes are 30 minutes instead of 60.

2. If you've been out of touch for the past five years, then you've also missed Weeds. This is another product of Showtime in a 30 minute package. With 6 seasons down and the 7th in post production, this show has morphed many times over and still gives you the munchies.

3. I'm sure the people that are raving about Breaking Bad are also big fans of Dexter. This is yet another Showtime masterpiece that always has a great cliffhanger at the end of each season. The writing is almost as good as Breaking Bad, and if you enjoyed Michael C. Hall in Six Feet Under, then you'll love him in this! You only have 4 seasons of Dexter to catch up on... hurry!

4. With the US market crammed with reality shows, I've had to search beyond the United States for some good story lines. I stumbled onto Doc Martin playing on PBS and was hooked! If you've enjoyed House at all, then you'll like Martin Clunes role of a brilliant surgeon from London who comes down with a sudden fear of blood. He moves down to the Cornish countryside and tries a new role of GP for a small port town. It's witty and well written with 3 seasons to watch. I couldn't find a good trailer, so I'll post the first few minutes of episode one, season one. With the ones I've mentioned and Breaking Bad, you should have more than enough. Enjoy.

M$Jason, for you I would highly recommend one of the following shows:
1.) MAD MEN
This story is set in the early 1960s (to start) and follows a fictional Madison Avenue ad agency. The lead is Don Draper, a chisel-jawed everyman of the 1960s with the pretty blonde wife at home and a bunch of sycophants swarming him. The show is great at showing the real brutal side of the 60s - from the men playing grab-ass with the women in the office and 3-martini lunches to infidelity and the illusion of the perfect American family.
What's To Love?
The characters are very complex, and none are clearly "good or bad". And they're memorable: You'll never find a curvier sex symbol than Joan (the head secretary). The writing is superb. Plus there's a sense of nostalgia for the 60s - by the time you're done viewing an episode, you'll want a martini, some jazz, and a dapper suit.
Season 4 starts this summer.
Meet Don Draper

2.) TRUE BLOOD
Jason, I don't know if I'd necessarily peg this show for you, but for most people this is a must. If you have any interest at all in the fantasy world of vampires, carnage, sex--all set down in the bayou, then this show is for you. This is not for teen girls. It's a redneck vampire show with lots of explicit sex scenes, drug use, and violence. It also has amazing characters, and a world that sucks you in (pardon the terrible pun). The show centers around a rather simple bar waitress named Sookie who is a telepath. In this world, vampires have just "outted" themselves to the public and subsist largely on a synthetic blood drink called "True Blood". Sookie falls for a local vampire and just as she does, women start dying all around her. Plus, again, more sex.
What's to Love?
The depravity of it all. It's an ugly, carnal look at humanity that is actually a lot of fun. The writers know how to splice in comedy among the darkness and keep you coming back. Plus, it just happens to have one of the most fascinating opening sequences of any tv show I've seen.
Season 3 starts in a couple weeks.

M$1. Dexter. A show about a serial killer who only kills other serial killers, Dexter, which has aired on Showtimme for the last four years, is my favorite show on TV. Played brilliantly by Anthony Michael Hall, Dexter is an all around great show.
The main character is by turns witty, ruthless, sardonic, clever and frazzled.
The show works in season long story arcs, usually there is a serial killer that eludes Dexter attempts to kill or someone who starts to figure out Dexter's secret. But aside from that, the show is not at all formulaic.
The only flaw in the show is a slightly uninteresting supporting cast. The actors do good jobs, but Dexter is such a compelling character that this doesn't much matter. The fifth season is going to start in late 2009, and I highly recommend you catch up before then.
2. Breaking Bad. Breaking Bad is cables answer to the Sopranos.
Walter White, a chemistry teacher supporting his family with his teaching job, discovers he has lung cancer. He can't afford treatment, so he starts to cook meth to make ends meet.
This is almost as good as Dexter. The premace might sound farfetched, but the execution is entirely realistic. Its as bleak as bleak gets, with just enough black humor to keep one from crying.
The things FX lets the show get away with push the envelope of cable, and there aren't good or bad characters from a moral perspective, only shades of gray. I can't recommend this one highly enough. I would stand by the statement that this show has the best cast on any TV show currently airing. There isn't one bad performance.
3. The big Bang Theory. Its formulaic, its a traditional sitcom, and its funny as hell. The premise is simple. Four nerds befriend there cute, female, down to earth neighbor.
Plots are never complicated but the dialogue is sharply written, with constant banter back and fourth.
The show breaks no new ground, but it treads the old ground with a sense of fun and enthusiasm, not to mention skill, that its worth watching.
Standout performances from Jim Parsons, Kaley cuoco, and Simon Helberg make this one a must watch if you are a fan of sitcoms.
4. How I met Your Mother. Another Traditional sitcom, this is the opisit of the Big Bang Theory. Its funny in a different way. Episodes will call back to jokes that have been dead for seasons, the plot is ongoing, the dialogue is snappy, and the balance between jokes and characters you actually care about works well. Fast paced yet nuance, the show is my favorite sitcom on TV right now.
The only strike against it is that it has Alyson Hannigan in a starring role. I hate her, but if you don't mind her, then there's nothing to dislike about this show. .
5. Bones. Bones gets a lot of s**t because its Foxes ratings draw, but there's a reason it pulls in such a large audience. While sometimes the plots are trite, the two main actors are talented. Each character is well developed, as apposed to the cardboard cutouts that populate shows like Law and Order.
Character development stands seasons, and a dark humor pervades the show during most scenes.
I care about the characters, and have even gotten sucked into the will they or won't they game the show plays.
The show is smartly written and well produced, and it manages to be both charming and deep at the same time. Its the only show I watch on its air date, rather than downloading online.

M$2. We just finished watching The Mentalist, I would recommend it as we both enjoyed it:
begin quote -----
THE MENTALIST stars Golden Globe Award nominee Simon Baker as Patrick Jane, an independent consultant with the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who has a remarkable track record for solving serious crimes by using his razor sharp skills of observation. Within the Bureau, Jane is notorious for his blatant lack of protocol and his semi-celebrity past as a psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned.
----- end quote
3. If you are into anything detective/crime related I would recommend NCIS Los Angeles It's a decent spin off from the main NCIS show.
4. I've been told Sons of Anarchy is very good. it is going into Season 3. I have not found it in my location so I am considering ordering it. Plot summary:
-----begin quote ----
Sons of Anarchy is an adrenalized drama with darkly comedic undertones about a notorious outlaw motorcycle club intent on protecting their sheltered small town against encroaching drug dealers, corporate developers and overzealous law officers. The club is equally determined to protect their ruthless and illegally thriving arms business. Charlie Hunnam stars as Jackson 'Jax' Teller, a man whose love for the brotherhood is tested by his growing apprehension for its lawlessness. Katey Sagal stars as Gemma Teller Morrow, Jax's force-of-nature mother, who along with Ron Perlman as Clarence 'Clay' Morrow, Jax's stepfather and MC president, have their own darker vision for the club.
-----end quote-----
5. Justified starts showing here in a week or so. I have not heard much about it previously but it seems interesting to me so I'll give it a shot.
---begin quote----
U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is a modern day 19th century-style lawman, enforcing his brand of justice in a way that puts a target on his back with criminals and places him at odds with his bosses in the Marshal service. That conflict results in a reassignment for Givens to the U.S. District covering the town where he grew up. He is an anachronism - a tough, soft spoken gentleman who finds his quarry fascinating, but never gives an inch. Dig under his placid skin and you'll find an angry man who grew up hard in rural Kentucky, with an outlaw father, who knows a lot more about who he doesn't want to be than who he really is.

M$A couple others that have already been mentioned that I would also recommend include Flight of the Conchords and The Big Bang Theory.
But, I also have a couple new recommendations that have not been mentioned yet and they fit the same genre as Lost and Breaking Bad and they are:
Journeyman
This was a show a couple years back that ran on NBC for one season. It is about a guy go time travels without being able to control it and he has to help people in each place that he travels to. If you remember the show Quantum Leap it is very similar, but with a modern twist. Unfortunately NBC canceled it, but that was a mistake on their part.

My Own Worst Enemy
This is another one from the suspense/action/drama style about a regular guy who has has a chip implanted in his head by a secret government organization. They have the ability to "flip a switch" and turn him from a regular guy into basically a bad ass spy/secret agent/james bond kind of character. The show was very entertaining and had a lot of potential. Again NBC made the mistake by canceling this one also after it's first season.

M$1. Weeds - There are 5 seasons out on DVD already, so that will give you plenty of interesting tv material to watch.
2. Dead Like Me & Pushing Daisies - Are some personal favorites, although they didn't really seem to catch on with the general public. I enjoy the beautiful, scripted language. Also, the beautiful, colorful cinematography. Pushing Daisies didn't even it through its second season when it was canceled by ABC. Dead Like me was canceled after it's second season, and a movie taking place 5 years after the show's premiere came out in 2009. Both shows make light of death, which is
3. The Office - Six seasons are out on DVD. I never get tired of the comedy. It may be a little exaggerated, but it's so sadly true about office environments!
4. The Fringe - this is my best friend's current love. I'm not a big fan, but he enjoys it. He was a big fan of the X-files too, so if that's your thing, it's a good place to start.
5. House & Monk - I like the mystery, the quirkiness and the comedy. House just ended it's 6th season, and Monk is in it's 8th. They are long running for a reason! These are also both shows where you don't need to know all the history, and can just watch an episode here or there.

Glee is a great series that you should catch up on this summer, if you haven't been following it so far. Amazing musical numbers, decent writing, and a talented cast - it's worth it just to see Jane Lynch play Sue Sylvester. I'm surprised no one has suggested this already.
Also:
Castle was one of the best shows this past season, and Nathan Fillion shows some very versatile acting chops here.
Enjoy.

M$1. Modern Family (ABC): Seriously, one of the funniest shows on ABC (Cougar Town comes really close). I like all the character developments and the way they use every family member flawlessly. Writing is brilliant, and is a must watch for years to come.
2. Community (NBC): You fall in love with every character...it's not possible NOT to laugh at this comedy. You may have to watch 2 episodes to really get them, but each episode is better than the last one (except when you get to the "Paintball" episode...nothing can beat that....that was just epic). You'll like it, great comedy at work.
3. Life: Greatest writing you're gonna see....stupid for NBC to cancel it. Watch it.....period.
4. Bones: I have to say the plots go get kind of boring (like in House....and I like House), but the character development and the creativeness of Hart Hanson (creator/exec prod) has always impressed me. Plus, the heat between Bones and Booth, the two main characters, are the best chemistry I've seen on TV.
5. Chuck: It's kind of over as a series, going into its 4th season this fall, but it was a great series about a regular guy becoming a spy. It's pretty hilarious once you get into the groove of things.

M$Best dramedy: Castle - Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic have great chemistry
Cheesy Fun - Not really a catch-up, but SyFy's Eureka and Warehouse 13 are both starting back up soon and are great fun.
Genre stuff: Fringe. John Noble does an outstanding job playing a (literally) mad scientist.
Hmm, that's all I got for now.

M$But first let me explain I really, like, r-e-a-l-l-y disliked the first episode, the second episode and thought the critics were out of their freakin' minds. Remember Fame and all the gang: CoCo, Amutullo, Doris and Bruno? Remember their cool theme song, yeah, like anybody was going to top this Emmy award winning show (which by the way happened after the major network dropped them, take that!).
Then came ''GLEE'' and my thought, no way, no way they will have characters that struggled like ''Fame.'' So I gave up on the show, completely. Then something happen, it's called hiatus when shows re-run and then came that night when nothing else was on (even though with cable there's a zillion channels) and up pops, you guessed it - GLEE.
SNAP-CRACKLE-POP happened inside of me and I really got into the singing, their voices, their frailties, the characters very contemporary and the coach banter a hoot.
I'm hooked, lined and sinker. If you haven't watched Glee, then get on the bandwagon. The show's music is incredible.

M$Want proof? Check out the past season's premiere. This video has the last 5 minutes of the episode, in which Special Agents DiNozzo and McGee are captured on purpose so they can rescue Mossad Agent Ziva David, who has been captured by terrorists. Leroy Jethro Gibbs leads the rescue mission by returning to his roots as a sniper in a big spot.

M$2) True Blood - Vampires not only exist, but the entire world knows about them. Since a Japanese scientist's invention of synthetic blood, vampires have progressed from legendary monsters to fellow citizens overnight. And while humans have been safely removed from the menu, many people remain apprehensive about… More vampires living amongst them in Louisiana. In the southern town of Bon Temps, a local barmaid named Sookie Stackhouse ( Anna Paquin ) understands what it's like to be an outcast. Cursed with the ability to listen in on people's thoughts, she's also open-minded about the integration of vampires. She is especially intrigued by Bill Compton( Stephen Moyer ), a handsome 173-year-old living up the road. But as Sookie is drawn into a series of mysteries surrounding Bill's arrival in Bon Temps, that tolerance will be put to the test. Other town residents include Sookie’s best friend Tara ( Rutina Wesley ), her slow-witted older brother Jason ( Ryan Kwanten ) and her shape-shifting boss Sam ( Sam Trammell ). Six Feet Under ’s creator Alan Ball created this sexy horror show based on the novels by Charlaine Harris.
3) The Boondocks - The Boondocks is based on the satiric Aaron McGruder comic strip of the same name. The show follows the adventures of two black boys, Riley and Huey Freeman, who experience a culture clash when they move from southside Chicago to the "boondocks" to live with their grandfather.
