What are the best TV documentaries ever made, and available on DVD or Blu-ray?

I'm looking for ideas of ones I might want to rent.

You can guess what kinds of things I might be interested in from my Q&A on Mahalo... a wide variety of subjects!
Tip for best answer: M$1.21
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I must definitely check out the ones that have already been mentioned, but the BBC's “South Pacific” (known in US as "Wild Pacific) documentary from last year has got to be one of the best I have seen.

Such an intriguing and relatively unexplored part of the world, with human, geographical, and wildlife features that are completely unique to it.

This documentary looks at things like Hawaiian volcano formations, Easter Island (where the inhabitants consumed all the natural resources leading to the demise of that civilisation), as well as occasionally giving insights into some of the South Pacific's native peoples and their unique customs and cultures.

It also has some of the best “cinematography” / production on any documentary yet . . .

Other topics explored include the fishing of the ocean, ie who is fishing legally / illegally, who is fishing responsibly / irresponsibly, and what is being done to safeguard fish stocks in the South Pacific.

Overall a great series.

If you can get them, I would also recommend the BBC's "Yellowstone", a series related to the National Park.

And also one related to World War Two, "The Nazis - A Warning From History"

Great suggestions with nice explanations of why I should check them out.

Appreciate the fact that you listed a few different things, and some less obvious ones as well.

No problem! The "Warning From History" is a few years old, I can remember seeing it back in the late 90s, but I haven't seen many as good as it since.

The Planet Earth Series is amazing. I am glued to the TV whenever it comes on Discovery HD.

It may be the best thing I've ever seen on TV.

Same thing I would post. Blue Planet is similarly awesome, and Life releases to TV later this month. all 3 are connected

Try Planet Earth and Ken Burns' "Jazz". Also World War 2 in HD which is excellent and 70 years in the making.

I'm not sure what the point of showing a series about WW2 in HD is when most of the footage is very grainy! That aside, looks like an interesting series.

I had a similar thought watching the documentary movie In the Shadow of the Moon. The sequences in space and on the moon are grainy, so while it's wonderful to see, it looks about as good on a small TV set as on a huge movie screen.
