Personally, I use spybot search and destroy as it picks up the ‘bad’ software that some rouge programmers choose to create. As long as you have some anti-virus software on your computer and keep it up to date, it should be fine. I do find that the bigger antivirus programs such as nortons and the others do not always pick everything up, besides they are usually expensive. The bigger anti virus software also hog system resources so I use spybot 100 percent of the time here.

Spyware and malware are different critters to viruses and the best way to beat them is to have several programs installed. I have Spybotsearchanddestroy Superantispyware and Malwarbytes.
These all offer free programs for dealing with malware, trojans and spyware. They are easily downloaded and installed.
The reason I have all three is that they each claim to remove all the nasties, but I have found that when I scan with each of them in turn, one program will sometimes pick up something the others have missed.
They do not automatically update, so you need to check for updates regularly and scan about once a week if you surf the net regularly.
To my knowledge AOL doesn't have anything built in, these are excellent programs and will do the job for you.
