What are the best SEO steps a new website needs to do?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I generally employ a pretty simple strategy. Here's basically how it goes:

1. Write very clean code. This includes making sure that the code validates (http://validator.w3.org), that it's structurally proper, and that things are where they should be. By putting the most important things (like the site title and important keywords) in the most important places (like the page title, h1 and h2 tags, etc.), the SE's will pick up the right stuff. In summary, be smart and make the site make sense.

2. Design for the users first. If the site has good content and a good design, people will visit it. If it works for the users, chances are it will work for the search engines.

3. Don't try to do unnecessarily fancy things. Flash intros, buttons, or banners are cool, but they don't offer much value unless you're simply trying to impress. AJAX-ifying a site is cool, but not if it's totally unnecessary.

4. Links, links, links. Link to lots of other people, and chances are they'll want to link back to you. You can certainly ask friends and acquaintances if they want to link to you, as well.

5. Social networking. It's the way of the future. Seriously, though, building relationships is the only way to build a userbase.

For more information, one of the resources I've enjoyed in the past is SEOmoz's Beginners Guide to SEO. Check it out:
