Wow, did you just list random sci-fi movies from a list? Or did you actually watch all of those?

You know what else I was thinking, that even though it's not a movie, The Twilight Zone series was also very good and very influential. I watch it all the time and a lot of the subjects are still relevant!

Which group of Star Wars movies do you mean? The fourth through sixth movies were released starting in 1977, but the first three were released starting in 1999. I'll assume you mean the earlier ones though.

The best science fiction movie to be released before Star Wars, was definitely Westworld. It was written by Michael Crichton and was released in 1973, starring Richard Benjamin and Yul Brynner. It is a futuristic movie, with a park called Delos which is divided into three different recreation of ancient times: WesternWorld, MedievalWorld and RomanWorld. At the place, there are robots which provide the humans there who act just like regular humans do and do whatever the humans want them to do. However, the robots develop a virus and start going crazy and killing all the humans in the park. It finally ends up in a hunt, where a robotic gunslinger (Yul Brynner) is hunting Peter Martin (Richard Benjamin) all across Delos and trying to kill him. If you liked any of the Terminators, then you'll probably like this because it is the same concept.

Since all the truely great ones have been taken, I'm going to go in a different direction and mention a classic in SF but its known not for its greatness, but for its awfulness. Sometimes bad == great :)

Yes I speak of none other than Plan 9 from Outer space
