Like any good manager, there are qualities that one needs as well as those that relate specifically to online:
1. Good social skills, including the ability to keep conversations going, on track, and to properly handle confrontations between users with differing opinions
2. Availability -- especially for online communities, a manager needs to be able to check in regularly, and thus be available to attend to whatever duties this job requires. Of course, this requires an open or flexible schedule, and regular Internet access. During times such as weekends and holidays, having clearly defined expectations regarding access and fulfilling responsibilities is necessary from the employer's end.
3. Relevant expertise and/or good research skills -- for sites or positions in which a manager needs to provide information or answers to questions, having a certain level of prerequisite knowledge and/or skills is a major plus, although being able to find accurate answers can substitute for personal expertise so long as the information are not above said manager's ability to understand and pass on.
