What are the best on-line resources for updating or creating a family tree?

About 15 years ago (man I'm getting old..) I created a family tree on my computer using the best resources I could find, my elder relatives. The tree was quite extensive at the time, but I would like to go back even further (as well as update the several hundred new relatives I have gained since then). In my case this means Germany (Herzlake in particular. Bonus points for any interesting Herzlake factoids).

So my question is what on-line resources do you recommend for researching your family history? I know there are many different services out there, but they all seem to cost money, and I don't want to spend it on something that doesn't really help.

Also if you have resources that don't really fit my situation (German Ancestors), but might be helpful for others, please feel free to include them.

Thanks!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There is the obvious www.Ancestory.com

If you pay for the use, you get to research death certificates, and other articles that you may not otherwise be able to find. Maybe someone else started the same tree, you can cross reference, and use what they have if applicable. I went pretty far using the free version of their site, but am planning on paying to be able to research death certificates and birth certificates and public info that I do not have access to.

I understand your concerns about having to pay, but I have a friend who was able to trace her line back a few hundred years. It was pretty cool to see that, and if I am not mistaken, she is still looking. I have to ask her how its going. From what I understand, it is worth it to pay.

Good Luck! Hope you find something interesting in your line!

Brian,

Sounds like you're much more a family-history-buff than me, so I'm not sure if this will fit all your needs, but I use http://myheritage.com They take a "freemium" approach which means that their basic services are - like a family tree builder and family website are free to a point and then they start charging an annual subscription. They do have some community / heritage research options too, but I've not really messed with those. Hope that helps you out. Good luck in your search.

The following informative site provides a great deal of information on how to trace your family tree and how to search public records and genealogical societies:
