What are the best non-fiction audiobooks?

Recently I've gotten into audiobooks.

The thing with audiobooks though is they vary a great deal in quality. Some good books are read in such a monotonous voice it's like listening to paint dry. Other times the sound quality is horrible and annoying.

On the other hand there are books that were hard going to read in paper form that come magically alive when read out loud by a great reader.

I have a pretty wide taste in books, and as well as many types of fiction I like non-fiction books too.

What do you think are the best non-fiction audiobooks?

I know that's a pretty wide area, but I didn't want to restrict people from making suggestions in categories I might not have thought to include.

Btw... I've got a couple of other questions open about audiobooks too:

What are the best crime and mystery audiobooks?
What are the best science fiction audiobooks?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

My wife and I just listened to "A Walk in the Woods" on a recent road trip, in between Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Wonderpets for the little one!

The book was pretty good, but I may be a little biased because I love all things Appalachian Trail.

Its definately engaging and funny in parts.

Bill Bryson sounds like a good idea!

Glad I didn't narrow the field any further than non-fiction, cos I'd never have thought of this one.

I liked Seth Godin's All Marketers are Liars and Unleashing the Ideavirus. I also listened to Jack Welch's Straight from the Gut, The Second Coming of Steve Jobs, all have great production value. I liked The Audacity of Hope and Free from Chris Anderson (which is free, too).
Hope that helps.

Nice list thanks! I've read some of those authors in book form, so I'd probably like their audiobooks too.

I've enjoyed a number of books recently. Freakonomics, Superfreakonomics, Outliers, Blink, Alex and Me (though you have to wade through Pepperberg's beginning), and Inside of a Dog. A Well Dressed Ape was also interesting. Good though a bit dry was Brain Rules. My top choices so far would be Outliers and Superfreakonomics, but I recommend reading Freakonomics first, and this is rewarding enough to make it no chore.
