1) John Carpenter's The Thing. I saw this as a kid. For the next week, no force on Earth could get me within 10 feet of the family dog.
2) Alien and Aliens. Slimy carnivorous aliens with breeding cycle straight out of (and into) my nightmares.
3) Hellraiser and Hellraiser II. This is a personal favorite. It makes the list on style points alone. S&M demons literally ripping people to shreds. No nightmares, but excellent nonetheless.
4) Dawn of the Dead (the remake). Fast zombies!
5) 28 Weeks Later. Fast non-zombies! I actually HATED the first movie (28 Days Later) but the emotional "gut" impact of the squeal more than made up for the failings of its predecessor.
