Tendinitis occurs when a thick fibrous cord that attaches muscles to bones, called tendons, become inflamed or irritated. Tendinitis is most commonly seen on the wrists, heels, elbows and shoulders. To minimize the pain of tendinitis at home it's important to rest the area that is causing the pain and swelling for a few days. After a few days of rest, you should become active again. Ice may be applied to the are in 20 minute increments a few times per day. Compression elastic-type bandages may be used when tendinitis results in swelling. Elevation is a home remedy to use when tendinitis affects a knee. Anti-inflammatory, non-steroidal medications (NSAIDs) are sometimes helpful to reduce pain. These include products such as Advil, Motrin, Tylenol and others, which may help reduce discomfort resulting from tendinitis.
