Nyuser33, I will answer these questions for you. I going to go with your first question first. The best exercises to build overall endurance are surprisingly simple. They are jumping jacks, jump rope, and power stretching. Treadmill and stationary bikes are secondary, but I'll explain that later.
First, with power stretching is that you do the usual stretching exercises and do two things different. Number one is you add swings and holds to it, and do it for about a minute at a time, with the general stretch. Then to increase the endurance level, plus strength, add a little weight to it. For example, if you do bend down stretches, put a 5 pound weigh in each hand, as you come down, stretch and hold that stretch for about 20-30 seconds, then come back up and repeat it again. Do this with all your stretching and you'll see the difference.
Besides that, jumping jacks and jump rope are just about the best endurance exercise out there. With the first, the weight of lifting your whole body over and over build endurance like no other exercise can, and with the latter, the same thing but in different body positions.
Lastly, treadmills and stationary bikes do build resistance, but with the first, the energy level that is used is very low, plus your running in a stationary position, which takes some of the endurance effect away. With the second, the same thing, but even more so. If your sitting on a bike, your body doesn't get that full motion, that allows full endurance training to take place.
Nyuser33, great questions, and I am glad to answer them for you.
