What are the best email tools out there for bands to use to communicate with their fans? Why is it the best?

Looking for links and explanations. I'm looking for the best email tool available for the (obviously) lowest price . Let me know why you think its the best, or what features bands need.
Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Champion Sound has a lot of attractive features. But check out their TOS under IP:

"Through your use of the System, you hereby grant dt and Rebel a perpetual, irrevocable, unrestricted, non-exclusive, worldwide, fully paid-up and royalty free right and license to use any content which you upload, store, use and transmit through the System for any and all purposes which dt and Rebel deem appropriate."

Email should only be one tool as part of building your community. The obvious choice is gmail, yahoo and hotmail/live mail. Gmail is a service I use, it is handy for your situation in many ways:

1. It integrates with other google services. For example, Google chat integrates with gmail, allowing instant messaging.

2. Using the Google Apps http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html allows you to create a portal that you can hang email, IM, and other apps (like a map of where your next show will be on, and a calendar listing shows and events the band will be appearing at). You can easily direct a domain to the google app home page (so www.myband.com will point to the start page and act like a portal for all the band information). This is a free service.

3. You can use google apps to have multiple email addresses for each of your band members (and if you want, the fans as well). having singer@myband.com or fanname@myband.com is easy to set up via google apps.

phplist is the best way. If you send out an email to all your fans and than want to modify it a little, it lets you modify the email you already sent out!

It gives you access to how many people are opening your emails and best off, it's free!

Check out the site, it's remarkable.

You probably want to go with more of a social network than a pure email effort. Using one of the music site, such as last.fm, you can create "friends' that listen to the same types of music you are interested in. To be honest, there's so much email out there right now that your probably going to get lost in all of the junk and spam.

Ok, maybe I didn't ask the question correctly. Let's I HAD to choose an email service (not twitter/facebook etc.. even though those are good options). What are the best ones for Musicians specifically? Integrated with music, easy fan management something like that.... any ideas?

Personally, I love Constant Contact. You can make fully customizable emails and several different lists for sending different types of emails to different groups of people(different locations, etc). It's not unreasonably priced. I think I pay about $20 per month, but you get a few months free when you first sign up. You can add as many pictures as you want of shows, add as much content pertaining to show dates/schedules etc. and it shows you how many people have opened the email, clicked on the links, or blocked the email all together, so you can track your mailing lists effectiveness.

It's a great tool for anyone, I think. It works very well for my retail site.

I find the best mass emailer to be Constant Contact ( http://www.constantcontact.com )

I use it nearly every day at work for alot of our clients, and I've used it for a few of my bands. The price is based on how may emails you send. $15 a month gets you up to 500 emails!

They also offer image storage, polls, and more. Also, if you're in need of design or development of your email (I assume it'll be an html email) send me a personal message, my girlfriend and I do that sort of stuff freelance (She's a designer I'm a developer).

I would say that Twitter is better than email. It is a microblogging application that allows two-way communication. It's super easy to use too and is instantaneous.

Use Twitter (twitter.com) and have your fans follow you. Once they are following you, they can receive your updates/news by method of their choice (RSS, SMS texts, or email) and they can comment back on what you announce. I, personally have found it an excellent way for bands to communicate, along with anyone wanting to communicate with large audiences. Best of all, Its free and requires virtually no setup.
