What are the best e-prescribing sites for U.S. physicians?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When looking for a e-prescribing site, if you want to participate in the E-Prescribing Incentive Program offered through Section 132 of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA), you need to make sure the prescribing system meets the definition of a “Qualified E-prescribing System” under MIPPA. For more information about the e-prescription incentive plan, try the official CMS site. Go here for a general over view http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI/03_EPrescribingIncentiveProgram.asp#TopOfPage and here for a PDF describing the definition of a qualified e-prescribing system: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/PQRI/Downloads/2009ERXMadeSimpleFinal508.pdf

To find a compatible e-prescribing system, you may want to try http://www.getrxconnected.org/ . GetRxConnected was created under The Center for Improving Medication Management and allows you to generate a customized Guide to Selecting E-Prescribing Technology after completing a brief technology assessment. The guide includes "listings of e-prescribing solutions that meet your stated needs, questions to ask the vendors as you begin evaluating various solutions and an estimate of the time and money you are currently spending annually managing the refill authorization process." It also helps by offering a step-by-step guide on how to transition from paper to e-prescriptions. You can also request additional product information/demos directly from the site.  To take the electronic prescribing readiness assessment, go here: http://www.getrxconnected.org/

You can also read the pdf "Medicare’s Practical Guide to the E-prescribing Incentive Program," pgs. 5-7 "Choosing a Qualified E-prescribing System"(http://www.cms.hhs.gov/partnerships/downloads/11399.pdf ). A couple things to note:
  • There are two types of systems: a system for e-prescribing only (a “stand-alone” system), or an electronic health record (EHR) system with e-prescribing functionality.
  • Federal, state, and private sources are offering financial aid for physicians to cover setup costs.
  • "Many states have developed web-based e-prescribing systems that don’t require providers to have additional soft ware. While these systems are designed to operate with the State Medicaid program, some may also be able to handle Medicare prescriptions and claims. Providers can adopt these systems at little or no cost. Because state systems vary, you should check with your State Medical Assistance (Medicaid) office about their e-prescribing activities."

There are also a lot of great resources here: http://www.ehealthinitiative.org/eRx/

and here:
http://www.acponline.org/running_practice/technology/eprescribing/medicare_program.htm

Good luck!
