M$Push-ups hit your triceps, shoulders, chest, back, as long as you do them right. You can also put your hands close together, to form a diamond, and really hit your tri's harder. Then you can spread your hands and work your chest more. Make sure your entire body moves as one motion - "like a board" they told us in basic training. Lay a board on your back when you are doing push-ups to make sure you are moving up and down properly. The board should not rock, it should move up and down flat on your back from your shoulders to your lower legs.
Crunches, really hammer your core, which is crucial for overall strength, you also hit your back really well and its a great building block for every other exercises.
I really think these two basic exercises and all their variations are a great way to work a lot of muscles with a simple, effective movement. They are great building blocks.
Good Luck
