" If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. "
George Orwell (real name Eric Arthur Blair - lived 1903-1950) is most famous for his novel 1984 about a possible future where a totalitarian state is given too much control. The book was originally titled "Last Man in Europe"
It was written in 1948 and published in June 1949. It remains compelling reading.
His other two best known (and widely interpreted novels) are "Keep The Aspidistra Flying" and "Animal Farm". The three of them could be described as his best novels. Certainly Animal Farm and 1984 made the term "Orwellian" common use even 60 years after his death.
"Keep the Aspidistra flying" deals with the issue of wanting to abandon the notion of money and live a simpler life. " Advertising is the rattling of a stick inside a swill bucket. "
" All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others. " is from "Animal farm" which is an anti-Stalinist allegory published in 1945.
