What are the best books (not guidebooks) that you have read about China recently? Please explain what makes them interesting

I really liked "Across China" by travel-adventure writer, Peter Jenkins, who really gets to know the locals and immerses himself in the life of the place he's visiting.
"Across China" is both the story of the first American ascent of Mt.Everest from the Tibetan side and an account of the author's travels, along with an interpreter, through some of China and Inner Mongolia's most remote and least understood places.
The book is available from third-party sellers on Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Across-China-Peter-Jenkins/dp/0449214567%3FSubscriptionId%3D19BAZMZQFZJ6G2QYGCG2%26tag%3DSquid624323-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0449214567
I've read a bunch of Peter Jenkins' other travel book as well. More info here: http://www.squidoo.com/peterjenkins
