What are the best bonsai starter trees?

I recently visited a friend's place and I was very impressed with her collection of bonsai trees. She told me that those are her favorite past time, making some bonsai trees and taking care of them. She told me that it is quite easy if I will just follow the proper steps in growing them. I am thinking of giving it a try and grow some indoor bonsai trees. What are the best starter trees for bonsai growing?

Many people think of tiny little Japanese trees cut and pruned to a miniature size but literally speaking Bonsai means 'plant in a tray' and while they are smaller than their wild counterparts they don't have to be a couple of inches tall; they can be grown in a pot in the garden and will be smaller than their wild counterparts.

the best starter trees are those that are fully hardy so can therefore be left outside all year round. elms are tough.chinese elms are what i'd recommend...these can be kept outside all year round or brought inside if you wish. - i have one on my kitchen windowsill... they do enjoy some time outside in the summer though.
