What are the best board games?

~Best Cooperative Game~
If you like the story of King Arthur, you'll love "Shadows over Camelot"!

Instead of knights on a solitary quest, you work together... but the great twist of this game is that there is the possibility of a traitor among your group! The game board and pieces are colorful and fun. Just don't get too paranoid and enjoy the journey.
~Best 2-Player Game~
My favorite has always been "221B Baker Street". You can play with more than 2 players, but it works out best with just two. I love hearing the story intro and gathering up the clues to solve the mystery. It's like Clue for smart people! I love how it keeps you on your toes. (this is my favorite too!)

~Best Game Nobody Knows About~
The game of "Past Lives" is fun! It's like Monopoly, but instead of gathering up properties, you gather up karma. Everyone starts out at the lowest possible level (a flea on the rat that started the black plague) and you work your way up.

The best part is at the end when everyone reads a paragraph about their past lives from the main book. Last time I played I turned out to be Jumbo the famous elephant!
~Best Game Overall~
This one was hard to pick since there are many that could fill this spot, but I'm going to choose "Trivial Pursuit" simply because there are tons of additions or expansion packs for everyone in the family. From the "Silver Screen" to the "80's" or "90's", you'll never get bored (board?). There's even a "LOTR" edition that I'm going to try next!

I hope I've helped you out by showing you at least one new cool game to try.
Don't forget to blow on your dice for good luck!

M$Settlers of Cataan (an awesome game anyone can play, not many know of it)
Life (quick and easy for the whole family. Not as long as Monopoly. I play this with my 6 year old)
CandyLand (nothing better for kids)
Scene It (Your Grandma will kick your butt. Board game has more stuff than the 360/PS3 versions)

M$Ooh, I love Settlers! It was the first "Euro-boardgame" I ever tried and now it has me hooked. If you like Settlers, try out Carcassonne as a great two-player game that's cut from the same cloth. My favorite game of all-time!

The best board game that no one knows about? Well, my brother and I had a "Sale of the Century Quizzard" board game, based on the tv game show. We loved that game.

The best cooperative game is Pictionary, We had the regular and Simpsons edition. Both very fun games.

The best overall game... Axis and Allies, how else can one "control the fate of the world"!!! If I have to pick something different, I'll say Monopoly.

M$Best game no one knows about: Dungeons & Dragons While this game WAS widely popular, it seems to have tapered off in popularity. With the patience and dedication this can be a very fulfilling game for 4 or 5 friends.
Best cooperative game: Taboo. This game really gives you insight on how well you know your friends and/or family.
Best Game Overall: Mousetrap. While this may just be the nostalgia talking, I think this game has solidified its place in the board game hall of fame. I mean, who can honestly resist the delight of watching a Rube Goldberg contraption spin, zip, and tumble. When that wheel is turned magic happens.

M$Here are my picks:
1. The Best 2-Player Board Game:
Chess - It demands great concentration, works up your brain and makes you sharper. It is also very-very addictive.
2. The Best Board Game Nobody Knows About:
Pasha - It is an ancient Indian board game that is played with the help of dices. It is also called Chousar or Pachisi. The board is not exactly a square board, but rather has two perpendicular strips (boards) crossing each other at right angles, giving it a look of a cross. Here is how it looks. It is almost extinct now.

Has anyone heard of these;
Shogi:

Halma:

Mancala:

Senet:

The Royal Game of Ur:

Chinese Checkers: Although it is not much unheard of, but it is rapidly loosing its name and the recent generations have seldom heard about it.

3. Best Cooperative Game:
Pandemic: Surveys say that this is the best cooperative game voted over the last few years.
Tobago: This was voted as the best cooperative board game of 2009
Ludo - Although very simple, it is very funny, very interesting and very appealing. Four players, two in each team sitting opposite to each other, can play this at a time. The players in the same team need to cooperate a lot to win. This is also basically a dice game and depends a lot on luck.
4. The Best Board Game Overall:
Chess - Undoubtedly the best. It has taken over the world and recognized as the best game. It has maintained its stand for centuries and nobody could replace it yet. Its popularity is increasing day-by-day. Further, as far as I know, this is the only board game has a World Championship.
Those were my picks. Hope you like them. Thanks
Personal Opinion

M$Hey @albanian! Thanks a lot for your feedback. It is nice to hear that the games I thought lost are actually not that much lost and people are playing it. It may be that they are not heard in my part of the world.
Thanks again

Many games have World Championships, including Scrabble, Monopoly, Go etc.
I don't know that the popularity of chess is increasing. It'd be great to see some evidence of that!
I like and occasionally play shogi. Also the Chinese version of chess. I have been very interested in Senet ( from ancient Egypt) since high school but the rules are really lost and the rules that modern folks have recreated are not that impressive. That looks like a nice recreation in the photo.

M$Best nobody knows about: Settlers of Catan. Hard to find in the US, and not cheap but well worth it.
Best cooperative: Taboo or "25 words or less" Both have the same basis, but "25..." has an interesting twist to the game that keeps it different and longer lasting (people who play taboo a lot seem to remember the cards and say the same thing when words reappear).
Best overall? I would have to say "Settlers of Catan" is definitely the best game i've played in a while. Kind of like a board game version of the computer game "Civilization"

M$The other option is to go to a local store or find a local game group and try a few. Once you learn what you like and you don't like, someone knowledgable like a game store owner or long-time group member may be able to suggest games you might like.
My favourites for your categories are Fjords for both best 2-player and game no one knows about, Pandemic for best co-op and For Sale for best over all, but you might or might not like any of these.

M$Best 2 (or more) Player: the A-Team board game! Straight from the '80's, it's based off of an episode ("B.A. Lends a Hand in the Formula") and comes complete with playing cards, character pieces, a dossier and a giant picture of Mr. T on the inside of the box! You can't get any better than that.
Best Game Nobody Knows About: the Rose Petal Place board game, based on the 1980's kids' TV show. Here's the premise: everyone's a rose, and the object of the game is collect the most tears (the rose that cries the most "magic tears" wins). Don't write it off because it's a "kiddie game." There's some really cool artwork (think along the lines of "Alice in Wonderland") and is actually a pretty entertaining board game. It'll definitely give you a reminder of why the '70's-'80's had some of the trippiest cartoons ever made.
Best Cooperative Game: Maze, a game that's similar to chess except that in order to win, the players actually have to collaborate on a strategy to bring all of the pieces (or "Mates") home. Great game for those that enjoy more intellectual pursuits, and love puzzles and problem-solving games.
Best Game Overall: Mousetrap! I know it's already been said, but come on...you can't deny, it is truly the best game ever made! Cool contraptions and awsome little plastic mice...amazing!

M$Then there are the games such as Monopoly, Life, Operation, Trivial Pursuit, Snakes (now Chutes) and Ladders, Parchesi, etc. I don'tthink they are as good as the first ones I mentioned.
Have fun.

M$Scrabble, I LOVE this game. My friend and I would play all day while our kids were in school. Requires spelling skills and stratagies as well.

Some great choices, I really have to check out Shadows over Camelot.
@philipy - The game comes with a decent amount of stories... but there are extension packs too!
I've seen that one @gno... I'll have to check it out!
Also... I forgot that there's a new 'team edition' to Trivial Pursuit. It's not a complete cooperative game, but it's not the traditional right or wrong answers. Check it out!

Phu! You know your games! Now, if you want a great Days of Wonder game, I HAVE to recommend "Small World" - a great game (works great for 2 plyrs) where you choose different fantasy races to populate your lands just when strategically advantageous. FAST moving game. Love it! I think it's my second favorite game of all-time.
221b Baker Street... is that like a one-time mystery/adventure, or something you can play repeatedly?
As a Holmes fan, I'm intrigued!
