What are the best Black and White movies of all time?

I'm a big fan of movies in the 50's so does anyone enjoy them anymore?

Let's remember "It's a Wonderful Life"

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Citizen Kane has to be on the list.

Nosfuratu (the complete movie)

and Metropolis

I know you mentioned the 50's but there are some great older movies too. I'll stop at three to give others a chance but I could probably do 20 on my own.

All good recommendations so far. I would add John Frankenheimer's "The Manchurian Candidate". My second favorite movie of all time, after "The Princess Bride".

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056218/

Angela Lansbury is awesomely frightening in this film.

Here are a few black and white films that I absolutely love:

1. Schindler's List (Spielberg)...truly a masterpiece, and great choice by Spielberg to do this modern film in black and white.

2. Psycho (Hitchcock)...the fact that it's in black and white seems to make it even more terrifying. The black blood is an image that sticks with you.

3. To Kill A Mockingbird...great example of a film that can live up to a spectacular novel.

4. The Bicycle Thief...This is an Italian film from the late 40s. It's a simple story about a man who loses his bike, but it becomes something so much more. One of the most beautiful films I've ever seen.

I loved Schindler's List and Psycho too. Fantastic directing and acting in both of those films.

"Citizen Kane," the 1941 American drama produced by Orson Wells, a fictionalized story of William Randolph Hearst. American Film Institute listed it #1 in it's 100 Best Movies in 1997, and again in 2007.

The Wizard of Oz

It was in black and white, and color!

In memory of Mickey Carroll.

Not only some of the best black-and-white films, but some of the best films of all time:

Casablana

The Maltese Falcon

The Big Sleep

It's a Wonderful Life

Twelve Angry Men

I could go on, but we'd be here all day . :)

AWESOME question. I agree with a lot of the films brought up here already - "High and Low," "Maltese Falcon," "Psycho," "The Bicycle Thief," "Chitizen Kane"...

Here are some more suggestions:

- "Force of Evil": Great noir film about the numbers racket

- "Sweet Smell of Success": Featuring an EPIC performance from Burt Lancaster as an insidious newspaper columnist.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZdXzSz07qU

- "Laura": Another terrific noir, this one starring the beautiful Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb AND a young Vincent Price

- "Treasure of the Sierra Madre": One of the best adventure films ever made, featuring one of Bogart's best performances. (My other fave Bogart is the also black-and-white "In a Lonely Place"). Total classic.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBqwFQUVB5A

- "Pickup on South Street": Sam Fuller's classic thriller stars the incomperable Richard Widmark as a pickpocket who gets involved in espionage.

The 1942 romantic drama, Casablanca, is definitely one of the best b/w movies of all times.

I know everyone thinks of Psycho first when you mention Hitchcock, but what about 39 Steps.

"What are the 39 step?"

Thats Hitchcocks best.

For artistry and "film noir" cinematography:
Kurosawa's High and Low
The Maltese Falcon
Citizen Kane

Fellini's La Strada probably doesn't qualify as noir, but it's a brilliant piece of filmmaking.

And honorable mention, for content more than cinematography:
Billy Wilder's All About Eve

Most of the films others have recommended are great, you might also consider:

The Sixth Man - Orson Welles really was a god of media.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_SQyCJega8

Kurosawa's Yojimbo (my favorite of his and inspiration for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly) and Seven Samurai (considered essential on many movie critic lists. Ikiru is another favorite of mine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uu40a3ANFw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mLrLHDdXHI

There have been some great modern black and white films as well, which cannot be discounted.

Schindler's List for example:

And Aronofsky's Pi:

My favorite black and white film is Charlie Chaplin's satire on Nazi Germany "The Great Dictator."

The first link is the film.
