What are the best affordable athletic shoes in your opinion?

I'm needing to get myself some new shoes for when I go to the gym. So I was wondering what some suggestions were....Keep in my I am on unemployment so the cheaper the better! I'm looking at a maximum of around 50 to 60 bucks...
Thanks!

Avia is way underrated. They are the most comfortable athletic shoes I've ever worn, due to the fact that the toe area is wider than most. Some like Nike and New Balance have such a narrow toe area, they hurt my feet.

Go to a discount shoe store and look for New Balance, those are honestly the best shoes for your money, also look for online coupons, discounts or special offers. Right now you should be able to get last seasons shoes so shop fast for a great deal, now is the BEST time!

I'd also suggest thrift and consignment stores. I got my last pair of New Balance at Goodwill, almost brand new, for $6, and my last pair of Avias at a consignment store for $7. I am always on the lookout when I go to thrift / consignment stores for athletic shoes that are barely used.

I've been playing basketball and working out at the gym in Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star's for years. I don't know if you're going to be doing a lot of running (not the best for jogging etc), but for regular work outs and aerobics, Chucks are pretty good (after a while, they form to your feet and become the most comfy shoes ever!
And they're like $0 - $50 bucks!

Side note: they also have low-tops which may feel better - try both.

The Nike+ series have shoes that are in the $50-$60 range that are fantastic. Look for the Pegasus series.

Hi there,
I like the Adidas brand.

As the others have said, you need to get a shoe that will be comfortable for the activities you will be doing. As well, look online for coupons and deals and also last pair or last season clearance sales. Watch for store flyers. Thrift stores can certainly surprise you. People buy shoes, wear them a few times and for whatever reason, decide to donate them so yes you can get excellent shoes for a few bucks and you are also helping your community's charities. If you do buy shoes at a department store, ask them about their return policy and then be sure to keep your receipt, tags and the box and try them out in your home for a few hours and if they don't feel good on your feet, just return them and try another pair.
