What are the benefits of dark chocolate?

I recently had to remove dairy from diet. Because I needed to give up dairy I also had to give up my milk chocolate and since I eat some everyday, this was pretty crushing. However, my husband was kind enough to buy a few different types of dark chocolate bars so I could see if I enjoyed them. I love them! They are more expensive, but much tastier!

In the news you often hear how great dark chocolate is, I'm finally wondering what the benefits are to eating dark chocolate.

Hi, Expert! This is an interesting question and I had fun researching it. Dark chocolate is actually very healthy for you and has a ton of benefits. This form of chocolate has been known to lower blood pressure and bad cholesterol, as well as boost your mood.

This happens because dark chocolate contains flavonoids and antioxidants. These help cells in the body resist damage from the environment and increase the efficiency of blood flow, lowering the risk of clots as well.

The thing about dark chocolate is, that it's processed less than milk chocolate or white chocolate. Flavonoids produce a bitter taste, and many types of chocolates are processed to decrease that taste or even to get rid of it. Dark chocolate is less sweet than milk chocolate because it hasn't been altered as much, thus leaving more of the flavonoids and antioxidants.

There are many studies that have proved the previous-stated benefits true. A recent study took a group of men and a group of women, all with high blood pressure problems, and gave them orders to eat a certain amount of chocolate a day. Half the participants were given dark chocolate, and the rest, white chocolate. The ones eating dark chocolate had lower blood pressure when the study ended. So basically, it's not just chocolate in general that helps with these health issues, it's dark chocolate.

Dark chocolate contains a lot of antioxidants (more than blueberries and a bunch of other stuff.)

I've heard that dark chocolate is great because its an antioxidant, and the research I've done backs that up. However, it can also lower blood pressure! The interesting thing about the benefits of the dark chocolate is that they're usually found in dark chocolate only. If you eat white chocolate or milk chocolate, you simply won't be getting the same benefits.

That being said, just like everything else in life, it's all about balance. Eating piles of dark chocolate does not equal a well balanced diet. On the other hand, if you must have dessert, having dark chocolate rather than something unhealthy and filled with sugar would probably be a good option.
