What are the benefits of a humidifier?

What is a humidifier? How does a humidifier work? When should I use a humidifier? Are there any websites, forums or blogs that compare humidifiers? Are there printable coupons for humidifiers? How does a humidifier affect my body? Does using a humidifier stop me from getting a cold or flu? Do humidifiers only treat symptoms of colds? How often should I run a humidifier?

A humidifier adds moisture to the air. Dry air causes many uncomfortable conditions, such as dry skin, itchy eyes, eczema and cold symptoms. Humidified air can correct or prevent these conditions.

Hi @horton, a humidifier is a household appliance that increases moisture in a certain area of the house or one single room.

This is how a humidifier work?
The most common type of humidifier is the "evaporative humidifier". This is a very simple type and it is also self-regulating. It has a reservoir that holds cold water and dispenses it into a basin while a wicking filter absorbs the water from the basin and then a fan blows air through the moistened filter. As air passes through the filter it evaporates some of the water it contains. The higher the relative humidity, the harder it is to evaporate water from the filter. This is why humidifiers are self-regulation, so when there is an increase in humidity, the humidifier will naturally decrease its water vapor output.

*Humidifiers are often used during the winter months since heaters and stove dries out the air in the home.
* There are several blogs and forums about humidifiers, these are:

http://www.dryeyezone.com/talk/forumdisplay.php?f=73

* Humidifiers reduces skin and respiratory problems that is caused by lack of moisture in the air. This is important especially for babies and small children since they are especially susceptible to breathing problems and infections caused by dryness of air or lack of air moisture.

*According to an article that I've read at healthtree.com, humidifiers are said to be safe and can prevent colds. Many people have used humidifiers to fight and prevent common cold. And yes, humidifiers are used to relieve cold symptoms especially congestion. Humidifiers are best used in combination with other cold remedies like getting enough sleep and being well-hydrated.
