M$I am a middle school teacher and I would say that while the reading level may be appropriate for some nine year olds, I would recommend the books more for readers aged 11-13.
The subject matter is scary, yet not too scary. Yet I would imagine some younger readers being disturbed by some of the material.
The best thing about these books in my opinion is that they are short, and very fast paced, which is a good thing sense most middle school age kids don't have much of an attention span.
