There are several different African American traditions associated with the holiday season. Kwanzaa is one of these. Kwanzaa begins on December 26th and lasts for a week. The celebration of Kwanzaa often includes family gatherings, gift exchanges, and the lighting of a series of black, red, and green candles. These candles represent the seven basic values of African American family life: unity, self-determination, faith, purpose, creativity, collective work and responsibility, and cooperative economics. They will be lit on each of the seven nights of Kwanzaa. Houses may also be decorated in red, black, and green for Kwanzaa.
During this time, African Americans may also teach their children about their heritage with the hopes of helping them connect with the past of their people.
On December 31st, there will be a feast of African American food to mark the end of Kwanzaa.
