What are the advantages of joining a credit union?

We're not particularly thrilled with our bank at the moment - actually, we've been unhappy for some time now. I've been looking into the possibility of joining a credit union instead. We have two pretty good ones in our area, one with a branch just a few miles away. Would it be best to stick with the big bank? What are the benefits of credit unions as opposed to banks?

Ah thanks MQuinn! The convenience angle is what I'm thinking - the ATM locations around town, etc. That does give me pause as we travel a bit. I need to look into this a bit more, I think, before making a switch.

Thanks again!

Glad we could help. If you aren't doing a lot of branch banking, even the limited locations may not be a big deal. I've heard of some CUs reimbursing all ATM fees.

There are many good reasons to join a Credit Union and leave your big bank behind. There have been over 200+ bank failures so far this year, and these have been for the most part large institutional banks. Credit Unions usually have superior customer service compared to large banks, and this may be reason enough for you to switch. In addition, banks will soon be implementing a variety of new fees for customers to utilize their services, and Credit Unions usually charge fewer fees since their overhead is smaller. The last reason to switch to Credit Unions is they re-invest in the immediate community by offering competitive loans that have the added benefit of stimulating the local economy.
