The list of the largest islands in the world would definitely start with Australia, but since it is also a continent it is typically listed as a “continental landmass” and not just an island. That said, it is just under 3 million square miles and if counted as an island, it would top the list.
Aside from Australia, the list of largest islands would be the following:
Greenland - 840,000 square miles that are part of the Kingdom of Denmark
New Guinea - 303,000 square miles of which the western part is part of Indonesia and the eastern part is part of Papua New Guinea
Borneo – 288,000 square miles that are part of Indonesia
Madagascar – 227,000 square miles off the south east coast of Africa
Baffin – 195,000 square miles in the northeast part of Canada
