What are techniques you use to relax and focus when trying to study, work, or just unwind?

My teacher threw a few last minute projects in science and history on me this week. Everything's due tomorrow (Thursday), and I need a few solid hours to focus. I can't seem to concentrate. What would you do?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

I would use a timer. Set it for 15 minutes. Do nothing other than your work for those 15 minutes. When when your timer goes off do something for yourself for 10 minutes. Get something to eat, call a friend, play around on the computer (blog, twitter, facebook, MSN..whatever), read a book for fun, go for a walk etc. Set the timer again for 15 min and do nothing except your work and then again 10 minutes for you. You will be amazed at what you can get done in 15 minutes. Be proud of what you accomplish and reward yourself. This will motivate you to do the next 15 minutes. If you think you have to focus for hours on end you will automatically feel overwhelmed and become distracted. Break it down into small manageable chunks, set mini goals and take breaks!

I use a simple technique called piko-piko (center to center in Hawaiian). It takes all of five minutes if that.

1. Get in a relaxed position
2. Put one hand on the crown of your head, and the other on your navel. You can use either hand for the positions.
3. Begin your deep breathing. Inhale while focusing on the crown of your head and exhale with attention on your navel. The hands will help you focus.
4. Continue until you feel energized. This could be anywhere from two-ten minutes.
5. You are now ready to ask questions of your spirit or make a prayer for manifestations in your life.
6. Close by thanking and blessing your spiritual source.

These days, I don't put my hands on my head or navel. I just focus on those points when inhaling/exhaling. It's simple.. AND IT WORKS! (Try it now and feel how much more relaxed you feel after you do it just for three cycles.)

You can find this and other techniques in Serge King's book The Adventurer's Quest.

Study or work -

i suggest you listen to no music at all. I find it to be distracting. If it has vocals, you will pay attention to the words. If it is instrumental, you may be distracted by familiar melodies. Turn off any televisions. Turn off your cell phone.

Sit upright in a chair, and make sure you aren't uncomfortable but not TOO comfortable. The Herman Miller "Aeron" chair is the best chair I know of for this task. Ergonomic but too utilitarian to enjoy. The chair should be adjustable so you can write at your desk comfortably.

Think of a reward that you will give yourself if you do the work. Say, "I am going to play this video game" or "I am going to go eat some ice cream/expensive dinner."

Unwind? That's the reward for doing the work. I am weird. To unwind I do work, LOL

When I am trying to study/work, I always listen to some chill music. Drinking subtle amounts of caffeine will definately settle your nerves. Have something to munch on, and don't stress about anything that is due. There are only 24 hours in a day, but that didn't stop Ben Franklin, or Mozart eh? =)

Good luck!

have steady music in the background and just do what you need to get to your goal. Depending on the music will also depend on what you want done. (Example: while relaxing, play classical music instead of heavy metal, or when working, play some alternative rock/classical rock for a steady beat.)

In your case with the projects, just play classical to help you brainstorm and upbeat music to help with actually getting the project into completion
