Common symptoms of strep throat in children and adults include:
1. Sudden sore throat, sneezing, cold symptoms.
2. Pain or difficulty in swallowing.
3. Pyerexia (fever) over 101 degrees F. If there is lower fever – it may indicate a viral infection and not strep.
4. Tonsils and lymph nodes swollen in the neck.
5. There may be white / yellow spots or coating on the throat and tonsils.
The cost of treatment varies from country to country but it is not much costly. Usually the broad spectrum amoxicillin (OTC) or phenoxy-methyl-penicillin is commonly used in strep throat infection.

M$Streptococcal throat infections is a very serious condition for children. If ignored it may cause rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart diseases.
Medications are: see / visit your doctor, OTC amoxycillin eight hourly for acute condition and phenoxy-methyl-penicillin for chronic condition.

M$Viral pharyngitis is also similar in its presentation except that cough and rhinorrhea( nasal discharge) are present along with above symptoms.
Sore throat infection can be effectively managed depending on the cause of infection. Palliative treatment is usually better for viral pharyngitis and if it is in initial stages of bacterial (streptococcal) infection as the they happen to usually resolves by itself.
Analgesics with Anti-pyretics are offered in palliative treatment.
Luke warm water with pinch of salt used for gargling is also effective.
Antibiotics are not preferred unless there are some specific symptoms like pus exudate from tonsils, high fever and especially if these symptoms are seen in children below age of 15yrs.
Antibiotics should not be used without appropriate medical advice hence I prefer not to specify their brands. The cost for treatment is quite affordable even without health insurance.
