What are some ways to keep your heart healthy and prevent heart disease?

My Dad had 2 heart attacks and had a triple bypass surgery prior to his death at age 40.

I am trying to find ways to keep my heart healthy and prevent heart disease. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

In the USA, Cardiovascular disease is still the number one health threat affecting men and women, according to the American Heart Association. Although heart disease is the killer diseases, it is often preventable.

Change your eating habit - frequently eat whole-grain cereal, minimize trans fat and saturated fat. Eat more low glycemic index, high fiber foods. Include soy protein into your daily diet. Consume more omega-3 fatty acids. Include antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables, dark chocolate. Take cranberries, grapes and almonds regularly. Eat about five ounces of nuts each week. Take multivitamin and mineral supplements. Reduce intake of soft and energy drinks. Don't add extra salt to food.

You should have at least 30 minutes of walking or cardio exercises daily or alternative day. Reduce stress and relax your nervous system with relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation, and breathing. Try to laugh. Lack of sleep is linked to increased risk of developing heart disease. So, try to sleep 7 to 8 hours daily.

More than 50% of people who suffer heart attacks are smokers - Quit smoking now.
Do not be obese - control your weight.

I am agree with this answer. One of the causes of heart disease is eating unhealthy foods ( oily, junk food) which rises level of cholesterol so to prevent heart diseases main thing to do is to taking good care of diet by avoiding food that are fried and are spicy. one should eat organic foods like green vegetables.

The main cause of heart disease is lack of vitamin C. Therefore, vitamin C supplements alone can reduce the risk of heart disease by 50%. You should eat lots of foods high in vitamin C, such as fresh fruits and fresh leafy vegetables. For more prevention tips, please check the below link:

This is a link to a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine. It found that people with high levels of glutathione peroxidase were found to have significantly fewer cardiovascular events. Glutathione peroxidase is made in the body by glutathione and selenium together. I have met many people that have experienced a reduction in arterial plaque after taking an all natural glutathione pre-cursor, together with a selenium supplement. Some so-called glutathione pre-cursors are dangerous as they contain n-acetyl cysteine, which can cause cardiovascular events - the following link will explain that. http://www.news-medical.net/news/2007/09/05/29493.aspx

I've been taking fish oil and flaxseed complex vitamins for the past year and i feel great!
All in all fish oil has the potential to enhance the immune system of humans. Fish oil is also beneficial to patients suffering from lupus (my mom has lupus), which is a disease characterized by the attacks of immune system of the body on various organs and tissues. Fish oil helps in reducing the pain and inflammation that may occur in joints, eyes, kidney, heart, blood vessels, lungs, nerves, etc. It also helps in reducing associated fever, skin rashes and fatigue.

Another option is a supplement called proleva which has been getting good reviews.

All in all do what works and stay active. I hope your dad makes a strong recovery.

I’m so sorry about your father. My father in law just had two heart attacks this last week I think it was his fifth one. I found out that he has also had two strokes in the past. He is a very thin vital man but he just won’t stop smoking which is what is causing all his problems. Some of the things you can do to lower your risk of heart disease are…

Follow a heart healthy diet by limiting your intake of trans fats and hydrogenated oils found in margarine, fast food, fried food, etc. Also limit refined sugar intake from cakes, cookies, candy, etc. Use extra virgin olive oil and garlic in cooking - they can lower cholesterol. Add Omega 3 Fatty Acids to your diet - the best source is Fish Oil.

Try to exercise regularly 3-4 times per week, for at least a half hour at a time.

Stop smoking and avoid second hand smoke - both are major causes of heart disease. Limit your intake of alcohol - excessive alcohol can deplete your body's supply of vitamins and other nutrients. Try to reduce stress and anxiety - they can lead to high blood pressure and other health conditions. Keep your weight within recommended limits - obesity is a leading cause of heart disease.

Avoid smoking including passive smoking.
Keep your weight normal.
Eat according to need of health not for the need of mind. Maximum cardiac hazards are related to excessive eating.
Regular 45 minutes exercise is a must.
Lower your blood pressure and visit your heart doctor regularly.
