First off learn to identify your snakes--don't go killing a good snake just because it's a snake. Look for the triangle head, short thick body, and venom pits.
Second, if bitten by a snake don't cut and suck like some John Wayne. The mouth is a dirty place and the venom may be introduced to the sucker. Wash with soap and water, immobilize and seek medical attention, being able to take the snake that bit you to the emergency room would be beneficial for the doctor who may need to administer an anti-venom.
