What are some tips to cook the perfect steak?

I am not the best cook, but I am learning. We love steak, but just not when I cook it.

My steaks end up being very tough. Please share any or all of your steak tips. Whether it be cooking steak on the grill or in the oven. The method does not matter, I just want to cook a tender juicy steak. Thanks in advance!

I like to add a little seasoning when cooking steak, first I take a clove of garlic, cut it in half and rub the cut side over both sides of the steak, next I brush a little olive oil on to each side and finally rub some fresh ground pepper into the steak. Don't use salt, it will draw moisture out of the meat.

I doesn't make a lot of difference if you are cooking the steak on an outside grill or indoors with a broiler, the method is the same, (I think broiling is easier and quicker) put the steak on to cook and stand and watch it.

Depending on the thickness, it will take approx four minutes each side, turn it over once. If it looks to be cooking too quickly, either reduce the heat a little or put the steak further away from the grill. When it's cooked leave for a minute or two to settle before serving.

The websites below will give you some more tips and information.

I suggest first cooking chicken then when you get good at that move on up to the steak...
cooking then is basically the same but I think it's easier to cook chicken myself

Basically you put the steak/chicken on the grill for 5-6 mins flip it and give it another 5-6 min

Then cut into it somewhere and check the color of the center (it's best to cut into the thickest part) and check each steak not just one..

Pink-ish like the picture is considered medium-rare
Pink-Grey is medium
Grey is well done
And with chicken you'll want white

Basically after the 12 mins (note that that's on my grill) I just put it on for a min or two and flip then check again

if the trouble isn't how done it is but how it taste then try different seasonings and maybe make your own steak sauce

First you should bring your steak(s) to room temp first before searing on the grill, about ten minutes should do it. This is important because throwing a cold steak into a hot grill means it will brown on the outsides quickly but remain cold in the centre for much longer, and this prevents your steak from being properly cooked in the center. Place the steak, onto grill and sear, you want to sear it not char it, until you have achieved the desired color or caramelization. Turn steak(s) once and continue to cook on the other side for a few more minutes or till cooked to the desired degree. When done remove the steak from the grill and allow to rest for 5 minutes. Resting time allows all the juices to relax back into the meat giving you a steak that is more tender and juicy and not tough.
