What are some tips for quickly lowering a fever?

I was watching a movie the other night, and a young child had an extremely high temperature. His father was scared he would have convulsions. I remember my mother saying that my brother had convulsions when he was a child from having a high temperature. I want to learn some tips to quickly lower a temperature if the time comes. I'd rather be prepared for this.

Just from a Mom's point of view, I have always used a cool washcloth on my children's head to lower a fever. I will take the cool washcloth and place it under their armpits and gently wipe down their body. The doctor had recommended to us to put the child in a cool (not cold) bath. But I have never had to go that extent, as childrens Motrin along with the washcloths has always worked. I know how I feel when I am sick with a fever and a cool bath is the last thing I would want to do. However if you can not get the fever down by using other methods, I guess you need to do what needs to be done to avoid a seizure. I would try the Motrin and washcloths first and see if that gets the job done. A fever can be serious, so always take your child to the doctor to see why the child has a fever and if they have an infection, the doctor can give you antibiotics.
