What are some recommended air purifiers for an apartment with less than ideal ventilation? Do they work or are they a rip off?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

One of the most well-known is the Ionic Breeze:

My sister-in-law has really bad allergies and has tried this product, but she claims it is fairly ineffective. I can't personally speak to its effectiveness, but it does produce what to me is a fairly annoying metallic odor. Some people have reported getting headaches due to using one of these.

Also, there was a class action lawsuit against Sharper Image regarding the company's claims about the effectiveness and safety of the Ionic Breeze:

I thought about buying one a while back when I lived in a poorly-ventilated apartment, but came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the price. Instead, maybe something cheaper would be worthwhile. If it doesn't work well, at least you're not out several hundred dollars.

Hi,
My personal favorite for an apartment is the Sharp Plasmacluster. Check out a full product review here: http://www.air-purifiers-humidifiers.com/sharp-plasmacluster-air-purifier.html It is by far the best for a smaller space- it states it's good up to 300 or so sq ft, but many report it works well for their whole apartment. If your apartment is over 1000 sq ft, then I recommend Austin Air Purifiers - http://www.air-purifiers-humidifiers.com/austin-air-purifiers.html . These both get rave reviews by users. They say they are really effective to clean the air and leave it fresh. The Plasmacluster also has a no ozone ionizer for extra fresh, vibrant air.
