What are some quick and easy things i can do to save money around the house?

Is there any household item that has a double use or whose container can be used? What are the real kitchen necessities? What items look fun and useful but you can do without?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A huge energy consumer is your HVAC system, then your appliances, and then your lighting. As stated below, I would recommend lowering your thermostat in the winter and raising it in the summer, to temperatures that you still find comfortable. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can set it to also go lower or higher at a certain time, such as when you go to bed.

Then look at your appliances. The federal government currently has incentives out for energy-star appliances, so replace 10-15 year old appliances with new ones that use much less energy. Turning down your water heater to about 110 degrees F will also save you A LOT!

Lastly, look into the lighting in your home. Change over to compact fluorescent bulbs, or even LED bulbs if you can them cheap enough (I bought some at my local BJ's Wholesale Club). Make sure to turn off all lights when they aren't being used, and put holiday lights on a timer.

Fans also use up quite a bit of energy with their small electric motors. Turn them off at night or when you leave the house.

Hope this helps!

If you want to save money think about the big things. Your heat & AC are large parts of your utility bills. Turning the heat down a couple of degrees to 68* instead of 72* in the winter and the AC up a couple of degrees in the summer will save more than reusing a spaghetti sauce jar. The biggest money saving device I have ever bought is a programmable digital thermostat. You set it once and it does the money saving for you. Installing one in my old apartment cut my electric bill by over 30%.

A simple and easy way to save money is turning off stuff that is not in use. Set your computers sleep setting so it uses minimal power when you are not using it.

To save money long term look at value instead of price. A pot or pan might be twice as expensive but will last 5 times longer and not need to be replaced saving you money. The lowest price is rarely the best value.

Most kitchen items are unnecessary. Electric mixers and bread makers are nice if you use them a lot but you can mix by hand. The flip side is things that make it easier to cook will encourage you to cook at home and that can save money. A kitchen toy that I have found that saves money is a slow cooker. You throw the ingredients in and it cooks over several hours on a very low heat and uses very little energy.
