Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

When I'm working with clients who have social anxiety, I want to know, specifically, what is going on for them. Typically, social anxiety is the fear of doing something embarassing in public. Sometimes it's a self-esteem issue.

There's a GREAT technique called a "Vertical Descent" or "Downward Arrow" that is very cognitive and used by Cognitive Therapists... I won't go into detail, but you can probably find more information about it on-line.

Another effective strategy for overcoming social anxiety that is often overlooked is PRACTICE and the DESENSITIZATION that comes with pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone.

Often it is a chicken or the egg scenario with people who have social phobias as they do not have much experience interacting with others because they are not comfortable in these types of situations and therefore they are avoided.

As with most things in life, if is necessary to be willing to PUSH YOURSELF OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE if you are to grow physically, emotionally, or mentally. One of the most effective strategies for getting more comfortable in social situations is forcing yourself to get out and interact with other people as often as possible.

Don’t look at each interaction as a success or a failure. Instead look at it as an opportunity to improve your social skills and a necessary stepping stone on the path to self-actualization.

My professional opinion is that practice/"desensitization" should come AFTER you do some cognitive work. You run the risk of compounding the problem if you continue to practice "bad thinking".

I think that, after you do some work around the irrational thoughts you're having in a social situation, then you can start practicing by doing...

I think social anxiety is an unfortunate problem that many people encounter. Self-help techniques can assist in treatment to some extent. I think self-help is more practical than professional help. If you revive your self esteem it will provide you more inner confidence and you will be able to overcome problems like social anxiety. Check out the 15 traits of high self esteem right here http://www.social-anxiety-solutions.com/high-self-esteem.html and practice them to increase anything you lack.

Along with the cognitive behavioral techniques suggested by drmatt, I'd also suggest readying yourself for social situations by making sure you are in the best physical and mental state you can be. I often get overwhelmed by social situations, so to minimize my overall level of stimulation, I make sure I am comfortable in all of the ways I have control over. I make sure I am not hungry, tired, in pain, cold, overheated, or likely to get lost. I learn as much as I can about the situation beforehand so I know what to expect. And I remind myself not to take other people's reactions to my behavior personally; most of the time other people aren't paying enough attention to what is going on beyond their own issues to notice your "embarrassing" behavior. It's easier to handle one difficult thing at a time, so when you take away as many of the other stimulating things as possible, the anxiety about the social situation is much easier to deal with.
