What are some of your favorite conservation techniques?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The basics that my grandparents taught me, starting with the basic theme of:
Use it up; wear it out; make it do or do without!

1. redo old garments for new uses, make shorts when knees are worn
2. redye (overdye) them, follow package directions with RIT dye. Makes some garments look like new
3. grow your own garden food
4. cook your own meals, use less prepared foods
5. turn the heat down to 68 or 70F instead of 72F if you can
6. wear a sweater in the winter if it's too cold (saves a bit of winter heat)
7. open the curtains for lots of natural light, so you don't need to turn them on all the time
8. try to combine trips to the store with one weekly trip, saves gas
9. share rides with friends and families going in the same area
10. borrow books from the library instead of buying them
11. have kids crafts parties at home instead of paying for classes
12. have kids birthday parties at home, with a great theme, instead of renting restaurants
.........

In Hawaii, it is quite common to find laundry facilities out of doors. At our home, the laundry water goes into a big wash sink to which I attached black plastic tubing and diverted the water to our jacaranda trees. We live in an area where drought occurs almost every year so we have buckets in our showers that catch water which we use to water our plumeria trees.
