What are some of the weirdest trades in professional baseball, and which do you rate the strangest?

One of those trades that I found interesting came about when I was reading about Ernie Harwell after he passed away. If appears that Cliff Dapper was a minor league catcher traded by the Brooklyn Dodgers to the Atlanta Crackers for broadcaster Ernie Harwell in 1948. Get that; a catcher for an announcer. I also have heard that the Cleveland Indians traded manager Joe Gordon to the Detroit Tigers for manager Jimmy Dykes. Also catcher harry Chiti wound up being trased for himself in the great rent-a-player deal between the New York Mets and Cleveland indians. If you have heard of others, what were they and do you think they had an impact on the teams?

I like this question and right away thought of the Ernie Harwell trade that you mentioned above. I wont elaborate on that since you just did, but I did some research and found a bunch of very strange trades.

1. In 1989 pitcher Tom Fortugno of the Reno Silver Sox was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers organization for $2,500 and a bag of baseballs.

2. During the 1994 baseball strike, Dave Winfield was traded from the Minnesota Twins to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later. The only problem was that the season did not resume, so the Indians took the Twins executives out to dinner in compenstation.

3. In 1998, minor league team Pacific Suns traded pitcher Ken Krahenbuhl to the Greensville Bluesmen for ten pounds of catfish, cash and a player to be named later. In Krahenbuhl's first game with Greensville, he pitched a perfect game.

4. In 2008, minor league catcher John Odom was traded from the Calgary Vipers to the Laredo Broncos for a bag of maple baseball bats.

5. For me this is the strangest trade of them all. In 2005, John McDonald was traded from the Toronto Blue Jays to the Detroit Tigers for future considerations. At the end of the season the Tigers traded McDonald back to the Blue Jays. So essentially the trade was John McDonald for John McDonald.

I think this is one of the weirdest, strangest or worst trades I’ve researched so far with regards to your question.
I cannot imagine the Boston Red Sox will trade prolific Jeff Bagwell to the Houston Astros for an aging 37 year-old Larry Andersen in 1990. The Red Sox have a great season at that stretch as they went on to top their division in the AL East but fell prey to the Oakland Athletics 0-4 in ALCS, tough luck indeed. The Red Sox is pinning its hope on Andersen that the team will give them a shot at the World Series.
The trade was a waste and made the Red Sox regrets its trading blunder later and until now. Andersen with just few seasons left was a big disappointment and later was dealt to San Diego Padres. While Andersen languish in despair, Bagwell’s star shines further, and was later named as NL 1994 MVP and has a strong chance that he’ll get elected in the Hall of Fame.

Well, when looking at weird baseball trades, you guys have covered most of the really crazy ones, although KerryK did leave out the REASON that Odom was traded for a couple of bats. It turns out that Calgary Vipers knew that Odom could not play for them because he had a felony conviction on his record and would not be able to cross over into Canada because of it.

The Chattanooga Lookouts once traded a player by the name of Johnny Jones for a 25 pound turkey. The general manager who traded Jones then cooked the turkey and ate it in front of the media. He claimed that the other team had won the trade because the Turkey was too tough.

Finally, though it wasn’t between two teams, the most interesting trade was between two pitchers on the same team. Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson were friends and teammates in the 1970’s and they eventually actually trade wives.
